I've had clients tell me a consultation feels like an extra step. I understand why. You booked color, you want color, and here I am asking to talk first. But I promise you, that short conversation is the reason your appointment goes smoothly. Let me explain what actually happens in a color consultation and why it's the most important part of your visit.

What is a color consultation?

A color consultation is a short sit-down before your service where we look at your hair together and build a plan. It usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. I check the condition of your hair, look at what color is already on it, and listen to what you want. Then I tell you what's realistic, how long it'll take, and what it'll cost. No product goes on your hair during a consultation. It's just you and me getting on the same page.

Why can't we just skip it and start coloring?

We skip it and I'm guessing, and guessing is how color goes wrong. Your hair carries a history I can't always see at a glance. Old box color, a gloss from three months ago, sun exposure from a summer at the shore, all of it changes how new color behaves. If I don't know that history, the color I mix might grab differently than either of us expects.

The consultation lets me spot those things first. It's the difference between a result you love and a result we have to fix later. And fixing color is a whole other project. How does a consultation save me money?

It saves money by getting the price right the first time and matching you to the correct service. Say you come in asking for full highlights at $210 and up. After talking, we might find that a partial highlight at $140 gives you exactly the look you're picturing for less. Or you want to cover some grays, and a gray blending service at $61 does the job better than a full single process at $76. I can only point you to the smart choice if we talk first.

It also prevents the expensive surprise. Nobody likes sitting down expecting one price and hearing another halfway through. The consultation puts the real number on the table before we begin.

What should I bring to my color consultation?

Bring photos, and bring your honest hair history. Photos help me see the tone and brightness you're after, since the words we use for color can mean different things to different people. What you call caramel and what I call caramel might not match, but a picture settles it fast. Also tell me everything you've done to your hair, even the box color you'd rather forget. I'm not here to judge. I'm here to plan, and the truth makes the plan work.

Does a consultation mean my color takes longer?

No, it usually makes the whole thing faster. The consultation itself is quick, and it saves time during the service because I'm not stopping to rethink my approach. Color at our salon generally takes 1.5 to 3 or more hours depending on what you're getting. A single process is on the shorter end, while a full balayage takes longer. When we've planned ahead, that time is spent on your hair, not on figuring things out as we go.

What if I want a big change?

Big changes make the consultation even more important. Going from dark to blonde, or blonde to a bold vivid, takes real planning and sometimes more than one visit. For dramatic changes or any color correction, we start with a consultation and a down payment may apply to hold the longer appointment. That's not us being difficult. We color with Pulp Riot and Redken, and we protect your hair with Olaplex and K18 bond treatments during the service.

What does color cost at Styling Company?

Our color runs from $58 for a gloss or toner, $76 for a single process, $140 and up for a partial balayage, up to $270 and up for a luxe full highlight. Your consultation confirms the exact service and price.

Who will do my color?
