Color Correction in Monmouth County: When to See a Specialist

Color Correction in Monmouth County: When to See a Specialist

TL;DR: Color correction is not one appointment. It's a plan. At Styling Company in Belmar we start every correction with a consultation and sometimes a down payment, since a fix can run 3 or more hours and multiple visits. If your color is uneven, brassy, banded, or the wrong tone, that's specialist territory.

I've been fixing color for a long time now, and I can tell you the hardest part is almost never the hair. It's the moment someone sits in my chair, pulls up a photo, and says "I just want it back to normal." I get it. Something went sideways and you want it undone. So let me walk you through what color correction really is, when you actually need a specialist, and what to expect if you book one with me here in Belmar.

What counts as color correction?

Color correction is any service that fixes color that went wrong, and it's a different animal from a standard color appointment. A normal single process color at our salon runs $76 and takes about an hour and a half. Correction is bigger. We're talking about removing built-up dye, evening out bands of different shades, canceling brassy or green tones, or lifting years of dark box color so we can start fresh. That work takes time, product, and a real strategy.

Here's the simple test. If your current color looks fine and you just want a refresh, that's regular color. If your color is uneven, patchy, the wrong shade, or fighting you every time you look in the mirror, that's a correction. You can see the full range of what we offer on our hair color services page.

When should you see a specialist instead of trying a fix at home?

See a specialist the second you're tempted to "fix it yourself" with another box. That's the honest answer. Most of the corrections I do started as a small problem that got layered with two or three more attempts at home. Each attempt adds product the hair has to hold, and it makes the real fix longer and more expensive.

You want a specialist when you see banding, which is stripes of light and dark from color that wasn't blended between visits. You want one when your blonde has gone brassy or orange and toner at home isn't touching it. You want one when a dark color grabbed and now the ends are almost black. And you absolutely want one when a previous lightening job left uneven patches. These are all things that need a trained eye to read the hair before any product goes on.

Why does color correction start with a consultation?

Because I can't build a plan I haven't seen yet. Every head of hair carries its own history, and that history decides what's safe. During a consultation I look at how much color is built up, how your hair is holding up strength-wise, and what your goal really is. Then I tell you the truth about how many sessions it'll take. Some corrections happen in one long visit. Others need two or three, spaced out to protect your hair. If you're curious why we take consultations so seriously, my colleague wrote a whole piece on why we start color clients with a consultation.

Because corrections take real chair time and product, a down payment may apply when you book. That protects the long appointment slot we set aside for you, and it means when you show up, we're ready to give you our full focus.

How long does a color correction take?

A single correction session can run 3 or more hours, and the full project can span more than one visit. I know that's a lot. Standard color at our salon is faster, with services generally landing in the 1.5 to 3 hour range depending on what you're getting. But correction is different because we're often doing several steps in one sitting. We might lift, then tone, then gloss, with strength treatments worked in between so your hair stays healthy through it.

This is also why I never rush a quote. A mini highlight is $99 and a partial balayage starts at $140, but a correction is priced on what your specific hair needs. You'll always get that number at your consultation before anything begins.

What products do you use to protect my hair during a correction?

We lean hard on bond-building and repair during corrections. Lifting and re-depositing color is stress on the hair, so we work Olaplex and K18 into the process to keep your strands strong while we make big changes. For the color itself we use Pulp Riot and Redken, which give us the tone control that corrections demand. The goal is simple. Get you to the color you want without wrecking the hair to get there.

Can every color problem be fixed in one appointment?

No, and anyone who promises that hasn't seen your hair yet. Some fixes are quick. A toner or gloss can neutralize brassiness in one visit, and our gloss service is $58. But lifting years of dark color or correcting heavy banding safely almost always takes more than one session. Trying to force it all at once is how hair gets damaged. I'd rather get you there in two comfortable visits than one that leaves your hair fragile.

Good to Know

How much does color correction cost at Styling Company?

Correction pricing is custom because every fix is different. For reference, our standard color services run from $58 for a gloss up to $270 and up for a luxe full highlight. Your exact correction quote comes at your consultation, once I've seen what the hair needs.

Do I need to pay a down payment?

A down payment may apply for corrections, since they reserve a long appointment block. Your specialist will let you know at the consultation. It goes toward your service.

How do I book a color correction consultation?

Head to our booking page and choose a consultation. That's always the first step for any correction so we can plan it right.

Can you fix box dye?

Yes, box dye is one of the most common corrections we do. It just takes patience because box color is built to stay put. We'll assess it at your consultation and map out a safe plan to lift or blend it.

Will my hair be damaged after a correction?

Our whole approach is built to avoid that. We use Olaplex and K18 bond treatments throughout, and we split heavy corrections across visits when needed so your hair stays strong.

Who does color correction at your salon?

I handle a lot of them as the Level 6 floor manager, and Matea, our Level 5 colorist, is excellent with vivids and balayage corrections. We'll match you with the right specialist at booking.

Is a correction different from balayage?

Yes. Balayage is a technique for painting dimension into hair, while correction fixes color that went wrong. If you're weighing balayage specifically, we broke down the cost of balayage in Monmouth County in a separate post.

Where are you located?

We're at 902 Main Street in Belmar, serving Monmouth County and the Jersey Shore, including Spring Lake, Avon-by-the-Sea, Manasquan, Point Pleasant, Asbury Park, and Wall Township. See everything we offer on our services page.

If your color has been bothering you, don't keep layering fixes on top of it. Let's look at it together and build a real plan. Book a color correction consultation and we'll get you back to hair you actually like.
