Summer Hair Repair: Sun, Salt, and Chlorine at the Shore
Share
TL;DR Sun, salt, and chlorine strip moisture, fade color, and break the bonds inside your hair. Bond repair like K18 ($22) and Olaplex ($49), a Scalp Reset ($49), or a Shine Bomb gloss can undo a lot of shore damage. Rinse before you swim, wear a hat, and book a treatment after big sun days.

Summer at the Jersey Shore is my favorite time of year, and it's also the season I see the most tired, faded hair walk through the door. The good news is most of it is fixable. Let me walk you through what's happening and what actually helps.
Why does summer wreck your hair at the shore?
Sun, salt, and chlorine each attack your hair in a different way, and down here you get all three at once. UV rays break down the pigment in your color and dry out the outer layer of each strand. Salt water pulls moisture out and leaves your hair rough and tangly. Chlorine from a pool strips natural oils and can even push blonde or lightened hair toward a green or brassy tone.
Underneath all of that, the real damage happens to the bonds inside your hair. Those bonds are what keep your strands strong and stretchy. When they break, hair snaps, frizzes, and loses shine. A whole day at the beach in Spring Lake or Manasquan can do more harm than you'd think.
What does bond repair actually do?
Bond repair rebuilds the broken links inside your hair, so it feels stronger and looks healthier right away. Think of your strand like a rope made of tiny threads. Sun and chlorine fray those threads. Bond treatments like K18 and Olaplex reconnect them.
We offer a K18 Treatment for $22 as a quick add-on, and a K18 Luxury Blowout for $58 when you want the full smooth-and-shiny finish. Olaplex is $49 as a stand-alone service. Both are excellent, and they work a little differently. If you're not sure which one fits your hair, I broke down the differences in K18 vs Olaplex so you can pick with confidence. You can see all of our repair options on the hair treatment page.
Should you get a treatment before or after the beach?
After is usually the bigger win, since that's when the damage has already happened and your hair needs to be put back together. If you've spent a week bouncing between the sand in Avon and the pool, come in and let me reset it. A single bond treatment can bring back softness and shine that day.
That said, a little prep helps too. A K18 Luxury Blowout before a big weekend gives your hair a smooth, protected starting point. It won't stop all the damage, but it gives you a head start.
What about your scalp in the summer?
Your scalp takes a beating too, and people forget about it. Sunburn, sweat, salt, and sunscreen all build up on the skin up there. That can leave your scalp itchy, flaky, or just plain irritated, and a healthy scalp is where healthy hair starts.
Our Scalp Reset & Repair is $49 and it clears away buildup while calming things down. It pairs really well with a bond treatment. If you want the full rundown, I wrote about it in what a scalp treatment is. It's one of my favorite summer add-ons.
How do you keep color from fading all summer?
Protect it from the sun and refresh the tone when it starts to dull. A Shine Bomb gloss is my go-to for this. It adds a layer of shine, smooths the surface, and can refresh your color between full appointments. Pricing varies depending on your hair, so we'll talk it through at your visit.
At home, a hat is your best friend. Rinse your hair with clean water before you swim so it soaks up less salt or chlorine. And skip the super hot styling tools when you can, because your hair is already stressed. You can see everything we offer on the services page.
Good to Know
How often should I get a bond treatment in the summer?
For most people, every three to four weeks through the summer keeps hair strong. If you swim a lot or you're lightened, you might want one every couple of weeks. We'll set a rhythm that fits your hair when you come in.
Is K18 or Olaplex better for beach damage?
Both work great, they just repair in slightly different ways. K18 is fast and rebuilds bonds in minutes, while Olaplex builds strength over repeated use. I often use them for different hair types, so let's decide together at your appointment.
Can chlorine really turn my blonde green?
Yes, it can. Chlorine and the minerals in pool water can leave a green or brassy cast on lightened hair. A gloss or a clarifying treatment usually corrects it, so don't panic if you spot it.
Do treatments work on men's hair too?
Absolutely. Bond repair and scalp treatments help any adult with sun or chlorine damage, no matter your hair length. Short hair benefits just as much.
Will a gloss change my color?
A gloss mostly adds shine and refreshes your existing tone rather than making a big change. It can knock down brassiness or warm things up a touch, and we'll pick a shade that matches what you want.
What can I do at home between visits?
Rinse before swimming, wear a hat in strong sun, use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo, and cut back on hot tools. Small habits add up over a long shore summer.
How long does a treatment appointment take?
A quick K18 add-on takes just a few extra minutes. A full blowout or scalp treatment runs longer, so we'll let you know the timing when you book so your day stays on track.
