Balayage in Monmouth County usually runs $99 to $270 or more, depending on your hair length, density, and how much of your head gets painted. A partial starts around $140, a full balayage starts around $210, and most appointments take 1.5 to 3 plus hours. Add a $58 gloss to keep the tone fresh.
By Matea, Level 5 stylist at Styling Company
I get this question almost every week from clients across the Jersey Shore, from Spring Lake down to Point Pleasant. The honest answer is that balayage pricing lives on a range, and that range comes down to your actual hair and the look you want. Let me walk you through it the way I would if you were sitting in my chair here at our Belmar salon.
How much does balayage actually cost?
Balayage at our shop starts at $99 and climbs to $270 or more for a full, dimensional result on long or thick hair. That spread exists because balayage is hand painted, so a stylist who is placing color on hair down to your waist is doing a lot more work than on a chin-length bob. A partial balayage, where we brighten the pieces around your face and the top layers, starts at $140. A full balayage, where we paint all over for that head-to-ends glow, starts at $210. You can see how these sit next to our other color options on our hair color services page.
Why is there such a big price range?
The range comes down to four things: length, density, how many sessions your goal takes, and whether you need a toner or gloss on top. Hair that falls past your shoulder blades takes more product and more painting time. Really thick hair does too. If you are going from a dark box-dye base to a soft bronde, that is often more than one visit, and each visit has its own cost. And almost every balayage finishes with a $58 gloss or toner at the bowl, which is what gives you that expensive-looking, non-brassy finish.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
Plan on 1.5 to 3 plus hours in the chair. A face-framing partial can wrap in about 90 minutes. A full balayage with a toner and a blowout at the end runs closer to three hours, sometimes more if your hair is long or we are doing multiple rounds of lightener to reach your goal. I always tell clients to eat first, bring a charger, and treat it like a little break for yourself. If you want your fresh color to actually last, read our guide on how to make your blowout last before you come in.
Is balayage cheaper than highlights?
Not always, and they are not really the same service. Highlights use foils for a brighter, more uniform lift, while balayage is painted freehand for a softer, grown-out look. Our highlights and balayage both sit in that $99 to $270 plus range, with partials starting at $140 and full services at $210. The bigger difference is upkeep. Foiled highlights show a sharper regrowth line, so people come back more often. Balayage grows out soft, which brings me to the next question.
How often do I need to come back?
Most balayage clients come in every 3 to 4 months, and some stretch it to 5. That is the whole point of the technique. Because the color starts lower down and blends into your natural root, you do not get that harsh line after a few weeks. In between full appointments, a lot of my clients pop in for just a $58 gloss to refresh the tone, especially after a summer of Jersey Shore sun and salt water. If you love the low-maintenance idea but want to cover some grays too, take a look at our post on gray blending and low-maintenance color.
What should I do before booking?
Save a few photos of the exact tone you want and a couple of what you do not want, then book a color service and we will talk it through at the start. If your hair has old color or henna on it, tell us, because that changes the game. You can browse everything we offer on our full services page, and when you are ready, head to our booking page to grab a spot.
Good to Know
Does balayage damage your hair?
Balayage uses lightener, so there is some lift involved, but a good stylist protects your strands with bond builders and careful placement. Because we are not saturating your roots every visit, it tends to be gentler over time than all-over bleach.
Can I get balayage on dark brown or black hair?
Yes. It just may take more than one session to reach a bright bronde or caramel without going brassy. We often build it over two visits so your hair stays healthy. Expect to budget for each session.
What is the difference between balayage and a full highlight?
Balayage is hand painted for a soft, blended look and starts at $210 for a full service. A full highlight uses foils for brighter, more even lift and also starts at $210. Both can run up to $270 or more on long or thick hair.
Do I need a toner or gloss with my balayage?
Almost always. A $58 gloss or toner is what kills brassiness and gives you that soft, pricey-looking tone. It also adds shine and helps your color read fresh for weeks.
How much is just a root touch-up between balayage visits?
If you only need your grays handled at the root, a single process color is $76 and gray blending is $61. A base break to soften a heavy root is $73. These are quicker, cheaper visits than a full balayage.
How far in advance should I book?
Color services take 1.5 to 3 plus hours, so those slots fill up, especially on weekends and before shore events. Booking a couple of weeks out is smart. You can always check openings on our booking page.
Do you serve towns outside Belmar?
Yes, clients come to us from Spring Lake, Avon-by-the-Sea, Manasquan, Point Pleasant, Asbury Park, and Wall Township. We are right on Main Street in Belmar, an easy drive from most of Monmouth County.
Can you fix balayage I got somewhere else?
Often, yes. Bring photos and tell us what products have touched your hair. Corrections can take extra time and more than one session, so we will map out a realistic plan and cost up front.
If you have been thinking about balayage, this is the season for it. Book a color appointment at Styling Company on our booking page and we will build a plan that fits your hair, your budget, and your Jersey Shore summer. I would love to paint something beautiful for you.
