Toners and Glazes: How to Keep Your Color Fresh Between Visits
Share
Short answer: A toner or glaze is a quick, gentle service that refreshes your color's tone, cancels out brass, and adds shine, usually in under an hour. Most color clients benefit from one every four to eight weeks between full appointments. It is the single easiest way to make your color look freshly done for far longer, and at Styling Company our glazes start at $58.
Toner and glaze: what is the difference?
People use these words interchangeably, and they are closely related, but here is the simple version. A toner adjusts the tone of your color. It is what we use to take a fresh blonde from yellow to a clean, cool shade, or to warm up a color that came out too ashy. A glaze or gloss does the same tonal work and adds a layer of shine on top, almost like a clear coat for your hair. Both are deposit-only, which means they add tone and shine without lifting or lightening your hair, so they are gentle.
In the salon we choose between them based on what your color needs that day. If your tone is fine but your shine is gone, a glaze is perfect. If your blonde has gone brassy or your brunette looks warm, a toner corrects it.
What a toner or glaze does for you
- Cancels brass and fade. Color naturally warms up and fades between appointments, especially in summer. A toner resets it.
- Adds real shine. A glaze smooths the cuticle so your hair reflects light. This is the glass-like finish you see right after a salon visit.
- Refreshes without a full color. You get that just-colored look without the time and cost of a full service.
- Protects your investment. If you paid for balayage or a full color, a glaze keeps it looking expensive for weeks longer.
How often do you need one?
For most clients, every four to eight weeks is the sweet spot. Blondes and anyone fighting brass tend toward the shorter end, because lighter hair shows warmth faster. Brunettes and lower-maintenance color can go longer. If you are someone whose balayage turns brassy by late summer, a standing glaze appointment is the fix.
A good rhythm for a lot of our color clients is a full color or balayage a few times a year with a glaze in between. It keeps you looking freshly done all year without living in the salon chair.
How to protect your tone at home
What you do between appointments matters as much as the toner itself. We go deeper on these habits in our guide to keeping your color vibrant.
- Use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo. Sulfates strip tone and shorten the life of your color.
- Wash less and cooler. Two or three washes a week in cooler water holds your tone far longer than daily hot showers.
- Add a purple shampoo if you are blonde, but use it once or twice a week, not every day, or it can leave hair looking dull and violet.
- Protect from heat and sun. Both fade and warm up your color. A heat protectant and a hat on the beach go a long way.

The color we use
Most of our color, including our toners, is done with gentle, professional formulas. Our permanent color is largely L'Oreal Professionnel INOA, which is ammonia-free and easier on the hair and scalp. If you want the full reasoning, we wrote about why we use INOA. Gentle formulas matter even more with a service you repeat every few weeks.
