Cezanne Smoothing vs Keratin: What's the Difference?
Share
Short answer: Both smooth frizz and cut down drying time, but they are not the same. Cezanne is a formaldehyde-free smoothing treatment with no harsh fumes and no waiting period before you wash. Traditional keratin can relax very curly hair more aggressively, but some systems have used aldehyde-based ingredients and a strict waiting window. At Styling Company we favor Cezanne because it is gentler and easier to live with.
What smoothing treatments actually do
A smoothing treatment does not permanently straighten your hair. What it does is calm the frizz, cut your blow-dry time, and make your hair more manageable in humidity. If you spend twenty minutes fighting your hair every morning at the Jersey Shore in July, a smoothing treatment is often the thing that gives you that time back. The differences between systems come down to how they are formulated, how strong they are, and how much upkeep they ask of you.
What Cezanne is
Cezanne is a formaldehyde-free smoothing treatment. That single fact is the reason we reach for it first. There are no harsh fumes during the service, nothing that stings your eyes, and no strong chemical smell lingering in your hair afterward. It uses ingredients like sericin, a silk protein, along with an acidic formula that bonds to the hair and smooths the cuticle.
The other big advantage is that there is no waiting period. With Cezanne you can wash your hair the same day if you need to, and you can put it in a ponytail without worrying about creasing your results. For most of our clients, that convenience is what makes it worth it. Cezanne works beautifully on frizzy, wavy, and moderately curly hair, and it is gentle enough to layer with color-treated hair.
What traditional keratin is
"Keratin treatment" is a broad term that covers a lot of different systems. In general, traditional keratin treatments coat the hair with keratin protein and seal it in with heat. Some are stronger than Cezanne and can relax a tighter curl pattern more dramatically, which is why some people with very curly, coarse hair prefer them.
The trade-offs are worth knowing. Historically, many keratin treatments relied on aldehyde-based ingredients to hold the smoothing, which is where the fumes and the safety questions came from. Many also require a waiting period, often two to three days, where you cannot wash your hair, tuck it behind your ears, or tie it up without risking a dent in your results. If you have ever been told not to wash your hair for three days after a treatment, that was almost certainly a traditional keratin.
The key differences at a glance
- Formaldehyde: Cezanne is formaldehyde-free. Some traditional keratins have used aldehyde-based ingredients.
- Fumes and smell: Cezanne has no harsh fumes. Traditional keratin can have a strong smell during and after.
- Waiting period: Cezanne has none, so you can wash and style right away. Traditional keratin often asks for two to three days.
- Strength: Traditional keratin can relax a tighter curl more aggressively. Cezanne smooths and softens while keeping some of your natural movement.
- Longevity: Both usually last a few months and fade out gradually rather than leaving a hard line.
Which one is right for you?
If your main complaint is frizz, humidity, and long drying time, and you want a gentle treatment you can wash the same day, Cezanne is usually the answer. If you have very curly, very coarse hair and your goal is the most dramatic smoothing possible, we will talk through whether a stronger system makes sense for you. The honest truth is that the right choice depends on your hair type and your lifestyle, which is why we assess it in person before recommending anything.
Whatever we use, healthy hair holds a smoothing treatment better. If your hair is damaged from summer, we may suggest a repair plan first. Our guide on summer hair repair covers how we rebuild hair after sun and salt, and our comparison of K18 and Olaplex explains the bond treatments we use to strengthen it.
Caring for smoothed hair
- Switch to a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates strip the treatment and shorten how long it lasts.
- Keep heat moderate. You will not need as much of it, and less heat protects your results.
- Book a scalp and hair health check between treatments. A healthy scalp supports everything you do to your hair, which we explain in our scalp treatment guide.
- Come back for a refresh a few months in rather than waiting until all the smoothing is gone.
